Wall Sconces

Wall Sconces: buying guide

An LED wall sconce lights the wall rather than the middle of the room, and its body becomes part of the décor. Most BACKHOME sconces pair a metal body with an acrylic candle or bubbled acrylic rods; when lit, the bubbles in the acrylic throw a bright texture onto the wall. This category gathers all our wall sconces, from slim 4.5 cm to full 12 cm bodies and from 30 to 63 cm tall. Depending on the series, you choose battery or hardwired power, warm light, white or RGB light, and the body colour. Below, one table compares the series and we explain which suits your wall.

In short: For narrow walls and hallways, look at slim Bubblelight; for fuller light and an RGB option, Bubbleflux (12 cm body); for a bubbled five-column look, Aura; for large walls and commercial spaces, Matrix; for glass and metal, Sera. If you cannot run a cable, choose battery power; if the light will be on for hours every day, go hardwired.

What kind of light does an LED wall sconce give?

An LED wall sconce creates a point of light on the wall with a soft glow around it. A ceiling light spreads light evenly; a sconce washes the wall and adds depth to the room. In BACKHOME models the light passes through acrylic, and the bubbles refract it into a pattern of light and shadow. Switched off, the metal body still reads as an object.

What they share:

  • Metal body: Every model has a metal body; depending on the series it comes in gold, silver, anthracite or black.
  • Acrylic light body: Bubblelight and Bubbleflux have a solid, double-sided acrylic candle; Aura and Matrix use bubbled acrylic cylinders and rods.
  • Integrated LEDs: Bubblelight, Bubbleflux and Aura need no bulb or adaptor; the LEDs sit inside the body.
  • Easy care: Wipe the body with a dry, soft cloth.

The one model built differently is Sera: a metal-bodied sconce with a 15 cm glass globe that takes a single E27 bulb, covered on its own page under glass globe sconces.

How do the BACKHOME wall sconces differ?

The series differ mainly in body width, height, power and light options. The table lists only measurements from the product pages.

The LED count varies too. Bubblelight and Bubbleflux have 12 LEDs (6×2) in the battery model and 18 (9×2) in the hardwired one. Hardwired Aura has 30 (10×3) and the Matrix models 48 (3×16). Bubblelight and Bubbleflux come in gold, silver, anthracite and black; Aura in silver, anthracite and black; Matrix and Sera in gold and silver.

Which series should I choose?

Wall width, placement and the effect you want decide the series.

For narrow walls, hallways and beside doors

At 4.5 cm wide, Bubblelight stays in proportion on a narrow strip of wall, beside a door frame or along a hallway. Check depth too, so the passage stays clear: Bubbleflux is 4 cm deep, Bubblelight and Aura 5 cm. Bubblelight Medium 40 cm is a balanced starting size for most hallways.

For wide walls and fuller light

Above a sofa, behind a bed or on a bare living-room wall, the 12 cm body gives fuller light. Besides the single model, Bubbleflux includes Dubble and Trio; Bubbleflux Large 51 cm can anchor a wide wall on its own. Five-column Aura lets light trickle down the wall with a play of shadow; under a high ceiling, Aura Large 56 cm stands out.

For coloured light and remote dimming

If you want to change the colour or dim the light by remote, the choice narrows to hardwired Bubbleflux models. The RGB option offers white, red, blue, green and yellow plus remote dimming. See them together under remote control and RGB sconces.

For large walls and commercial spaces

In hotels, cafés, restaurants, offices and showrooms, and on large living-room walls, the 58–63 cm Matrix models stand out. Bubbled acrylic rods reach up and down from a chrome or gold centre, an object even when off. Matrix Melodi, at 63 cm, is the tallest and ships assembled, ready to mount. Matrix is hardwired only.

For a glass and metal look

If you prefer glass to acrylic, the Sera glass globe sconce in gold or silver suits both modern and classic rooms. At 24 cm deep, it fits living rooms, entrances and bedside walls with free space in front better than narrow hallways.

How do you choose the sconce height?

Wall size, ceiling height and the furniture below decide the height: the larger the space and the higher the ceiling, the better a tall sconce sits.

  • 30–31 cm: Bedsides, beside mirrors, narrow walls and small entrances, where you see it up close.
  • 39–40 cm: A balanced middle size for most living-room walls, hallways and above sofas.
  • 51–56 cm: Wide living-room walls, stairwells and rooms with high ceilings.
  • 58–63 cm: Large walls, lobbies and sconces meant to be the focal point.

For two sconces on one wall, choose the same series and height. For mounting height and spacing, see our wall sconce height and placement guide, with a room-by-room table.

Battery or hardwired?

Choose battery power if the wall has no electrical point or you use the light now and then; hardwired if it will be on for hours daily. Bubblelight, Bubbleflux and Aura come in both; Matrix is hardwired only.

  • Battery model: Runs on a 9V battery, switches on and off with a button on the body, and one battery is included. Battery Bubbleflux has four battery slots. All models are under battery operated sconces.
  • Hardwired model: Connects to the electrical point on the wall; Bubblelight, Bubbleflux and Aura run on 110–220 V household mains. Have a qualified electrician connect it. See hardwired sconces.

How do you match body colour and light colour?

Match the body colour to the metal details in the room, and the light colour to when and with which other lights the sconce will be on.

  • Gold: Works with wood, cream and beige walls and with brass or gold door handles and frames.
  • Silver: Suits grey, white and cool-toned walls and modern homes with chrome accessories.
  • Anthracite and black: A crisp line on a light wall, a quiet, integrated look on a dark one.
  • Warm or white: Warm light is soft and close to yellow; white light looks crisper and brighter. Keep sconces on the same wall in the same light colour.

Our warm light or white light guide goes through the choice room by room. Still unsure? Upload a photo of your wall to See it in your room, place the sconce on it and view it lit and unlit. The photo is processed only in your browser and never sent to a server; mark the real size on the wall with a tape measure.

What should you check before mounting a wall sconce?

Mark the position, check inside the wall and prepare for the power type:

  1. Mark the position: Hold the sconce to the wall, check it with a spirit level and mark the screw holes in pencil.
  2. Check the wall: Before drilling, check for cables and pipes; stay clear of the lines directly above and below sockets and switches.
  3. Switch off the circuit (hardwired): Turn off the relevant circuit breaker and leave the connection to an electrician.
  4. Fix and test: Fit the wall plugs, screw the sconce in place and, on a battery model, insert the battery and test the button.

Frequently asked questions

Does an LED wall sconce need a bulb?

In the Bubblelight, Bubbleflux and Aura series the LEDs are inside the body, so these models need no bulb or adaptor. The Matrix models also carry 48 LEDs in the body. The glass globe Sera takes a single E27 bulb, and the bulb you fit decides the colour and tone of the light.

Which rooms are wall sconces used in?

Wall sconces are used most in living rooms, hallways, entrances, bedsides and stairwells. A symmetrical pair above a sofa or console, a spaced row along a hallway and one sconce either side of the bed are common layouts. Large models such as Matrix are also recommended for hotel, café, restaurant and showroom walls.

What should I check when buying two sconces for one wall?

Choose both in the same series, height, body colour and light colour; different tones side by side make a wall look uneven. Remember that each hardwired sconce needs its own electrical point. If you will add a matching sconce later, note the body and light colour of your first order.

Can a wall sconce be the main light in a room?

BACKHOME sconces are decorative pieces that add light and texture to the wall; plan them as ambient light alongside a ceiling light, not as the room's only source. Sconces alone in the evening give a calm feel. Use a directional lamp for reading and work.

Which body colours are available?

Body colours depend on the series. Bubblelight and Bubbleflux come in gold, silver, anthracite and black. Aura comes in silver, anthracite and black; the Matrix models and Sera in gold and silver. Each product page offers only the colours made for that model, and the images change with your choice.

How do you clean a wall sconce?

Switch the sconce off and wipe the body with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, rough sponges or spray directly onto acrylic and metal surfaces, as they can leave scratches and marks. Take care that no liquid gets inside the body.

BACKHOME wall sconces are made in Türkiye. Once you have chosen a series, set the height, body colour and light colour on the product page, and try it on your wall before you mount it.
